  • Acrylates/C10-30 Alkyl Acrylate Crosspolymer
an emulsifier for oilin-water emulsions. It has thickening and formula-stabilizing properties, similar to a carbomer, but with better waterproofing capabilities. It permits a formulation?s oil phase component to be released immediately upon rubbing the product into the skin. It is used in moisturizer emulsions and creams, waterproof sunscreens, and fragrance emulsions. See also carbomer.
  • Bis-Ethylhexyloxyphenol Methoxyphenyl Triazine
Its INCI name is a bit of a mouthful, but Bis-Ethylhexyloxyphenol Methoxyphenyl Triazine is worth recognizing it as it is one of the best sunscreen agents known today. Unfortunately, it's not FDA-approved so you will not find it in sunscreens coming from the US (not because it's not good, but because US regulations make it impossible for newer sunscreen agents to get approved), but it is widely available in other parts of the world like Europe, Australia or Asia. It is a broad-spectrum (covers the whole UVB and UVA range, 280-400 nm) chemical sunscreen agent with peak protections at about 310 and 345 nm and unlike older UV filters, it's very photostable. It hardly deteriorates in the presence of UV light and it's also useful in stabilizing other less stable sunscreen agents, like the famous UVA protector, avobenzone. It's a new generation sunscreen agent that was specifically designed for high SPF and good UVA protection and based on a 2007 study that compared 18 sunscreen agents available in the EU it really had the best SPF protection (they used the highest concentration allowed by EU regulations from each 18 sunscreens and Trinosorb S gave an SPF 20 all by itself). It is an oil-soluble, slightly yellowish powder that is not absorbed into the skin too much. This is good news for a sunscreen agent as it needs to be on the surface of the skin to do its job properly. Regarding Bis-Ethylhexyloxyphenol Methoxyphenyl Triazine side effects, we have good news here as well: it has a great safety profile and unlike a couple of other chemical sunscreens, Trinosorb S (and M) does not show estrogenic activity. Overall, we think Trinosorb S is one of the best sunscreen options available today.
  • Butylene Glycol
Butylene glycol (1.3-Butanediol) is a small organic alcohol used as solvent and conditioning agent. (Source : EWG) Butylene Glycol has many useful functions in cosmetics and it's also a good humectant, making it a good ingredient for dry skin types.
  • Cetearyl Alcohol
Cetearyl Alcohol is a mixture of cetyl and stearyl alcohols that can come from vegetable or synthetic sources.
  • Cyclopentasiloxane
Cyclopentasiloxane (cyclomethicone) is a silicon-based cyclic compound; may be associated with environmental toxicity. (Source : EWG)
  • Decyl Glucoside
Decyl glucoside is a glucose-based surfactant commonly used in shampoos and body washes.
  • Diethylamino Hydroxybenzoyl Hexyl Benzoate
Diethylamino Hydroxybenqoyl Hexyl Benzoate is a relatively new chemical sunscreen agent. It's unavailable in the US and Canada due to their FDA regulations, but can be quite commonly found in sunscreen in other countries due to its high UVA protection properties.
  • Disodium Edta
EDTA (ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid) is a chelating agent, used to sequester and decrease the reactivity of metal ions that may be present in a product.
  • Ethylhexyl Methoxycinnamate
This common sunscreen ingredient is shown to have hormone-mimicking effects on laboratory animals. This chemical is found in humans, including mothers' milk samples.
  • Phenoxyethanol
Phenoxyethanol is a preservative used in cosmetics and personal care products.
  • Polymethylsilsesquioxane
Polymethylsilsesquioxane is a polymer formed by the hydrolysis and condensation ofmethyltrimethoxysilane.
  • Polysorbate 60
an emulsifier, wetting agent, and detergent emulsifier for mineral oil, fats, and waxes. It is also a stabilizer of essential oils in water. It is widely used in cosmetic and toiletry preparations.
  • Propylene Glycol
Next to water, this is the most common moisturecarrying vehicle used in cosmetic formulations. It has better skin permeation than glycerin, and it also gives a pleasant feel with less greasiness than glycerin. Propylene glycol is used as a humectant because it absorbs water from the air. It also serves as a solvent for anti-oxidants and preservatives. In addition, it has preservative properties against bacteria and fungi when used in concentrations of 16 percent or higher. There is a concern that propylene glycol is an irritant at high concentrations, though it appears to be quite safe at usage levels under 5 percent. (Source : Michalun)
  • silica
also known as silicone dioxide. Silica has a variety of applications: to control a product?s viscosity, add bulk, and reduce a formulation?s transparency. It can also function as an abrasive. In addition, it can act as a carrier for emollients, and may be used to improve a formulation?s skin feel. Spherical silica is porous and highly absorbent, with absorption capabilities roughly 1.5 times its weight. A typical claim associated with silica is oil control. It is found in sunscreens, scrubs, and wide range of other skin care, makeup, and hair care preparations. It has been successfully used in hypoallergenic and allergy-tested formulations.
  • Sodium Acetylated Hyaluronate
Sodium Acetylated Hyaluronate is an acetyl ester of Sodium Hyaluronate (q.v.).
  • Titanium Dioxide
Titanium dioxide is one of the most common physical UV blocker ingredient for sunscreens. Titanium Dioxide is also chemically inert, making it a crucial ingredient for sensitive skin types. Furthermore, Titanium Dioxide can be scaled down to nano-particles, making it highly unlikely to clog pores. It is often used in conjunction with other sunscreen chemicals to boost the product?s SPF value, thus reducing the risk of irritation or allergies attributed to excessive usage of chemical sunscreens. The smaller the particle size, the more unobtrusive TiO2?s application. Large particles, on the other hand, leave a whitish wash or look on the skin. (Source : Michalun) There's debate in the scientific community on the dangers of nano-particles penetrating deep into the skin, however recent studies have dismiss such claims.
  • tranexamic acid
Tranexamic Acid is an organic acid.
  • Triethanolamine
Triethanolamine is a strongly alkaline substance used as surfactant and pH adjusting chemical.
  • xanthan gum
xanthan gum (corn starch gum)?serves as a texturizer, carrier agent, and gelling agent in cosmetic preparations. It also stabilizes and thickens formulations. This gum is produced through a fermentation of carbohydrate and Xanthomonas campestris. M. Varinia Michalun, Joseph C. DiNardo - Skin Care and Cosmetic Ingredients Dictionary-Milady (2014) p.321
